King Lear

King Lear by William Shakespeare

Directed and Designed by Guy De Lancey

Lear. This time it hurts.

Lear_poster

Following on from their nightmarish vision of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Mechanicals now uncover their dangerously absurd conjuring of William Shakespeare’s King Lear at the Intimate Theatre from 4 April to 5 May 2012. Under the direction of Guy De Lancey, King Lear is performed by Graham Weir and a cast of Madmen, Whores and Jewellers. Inverting received notions of the inaccessibility of Shakespearean text, The Mechanicals strive to demystify the nostalgic reverence for the language, while at the same time steering away from a popularized send-up of the complexities of the material. This rendition of King Lear enmeshes the manic hilarity of suffering, the banality of bloodlust and the toxic vertigo of bloody lust. “Tis a naughty night to swim in”. (Fool; Act 3 Scene 4).

The Mechanicals' Lovborg's Women is back for another run at The Intimate

THE MECHANICALS' PRESENT LOVBORG’S WOMEN (after Woody Allen)

                       DIRECTED BY CHRISTOPHER WEARE

STARRING:     Adrian Collins, Mikkie-Dene Le Roux,Andrew Laubscher and Tinarie Van Wyk Loots

VENUE:         THE INTIMATE, 37 Orange Street, Gardens

DATES:          13 sept – 29 Sept Tuesday to Sat 20h00

The Mechanicals presents the hilarious spoof, Lovborg’s

Women. This is merely a starting point to take a satirical look at twentieth century reactions to the

genres of realism and naturalism.

Three of playwright Lovborg’s heroines are considered in a wacky

comedy of remorse, lust, jealousy and revenge. Hens, earmuffs and

geraniums are all part of this eloquent tapestry.

The Mechanicals interpret Lovborg’s characters in scenes

from I Prefer to Yodel, While We Three Hemorrhage  and Mellow

Pears spoofing naturalism and realism. Fast, furious and comical

physical feats define a reconsideration of Lovborg’s women seen

through the eyes of practitioners such as Steven Berkoff, DV8

Physical Theatre and  Brett Bailey. The climax is an innovative and highly

comical comment on television realism.

Safe and free parking  is a small bonus.
